Is HYROX the new Crossfit?

Let’s look at the similarities, differences and why they both work very well Together.

If you’ve spent any time in the functional fitness space lately, you’ve probably heard the buzz around HYROX. Athletes across the country—from everyday gym-goers to elite competitors—are signing up in droves. Naturally, the question comes up:

Is HYROX the new CrossFit?

Short answer: not exactly.
The better answer is they’re different—and that’s exactly why they’re so powerful together. So this really is a discussion of AND not OR.

Let’s break it down.

What Is HYROX?

HYROX is a global indoor fitness race combining running + functional workouts in a standardized format:

  • 8 x 1 km runs

  • 8 workout stations (sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, etc.)

Every race is the same, no matter where you compete. That consistency is a huge part of its appeal, especially for athletes who love measurable performance and repeatable benchmarks. This really does cater to the running population where you know the task (marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K). You know what the end goal requires and you can reverse engineer a solid training program with periodization, a taper and “race week”.

What Is CrossFit?

CrossFit is a constantly varied training methodology built around:

  • Strength training

  • Olympic lifting

  • Gymnastics

  • Conditioning

The magic of CrossFit lies in its unpredictability. Workouts (WODs) change daily, constantly challenging different energy systems and movement patterns. This has done well for so many people to keep throwing challenges at them and they have to rapidly adapt and strategize on the fly. The movements involved in it are extensive and they continue to grow in technicality and complexity. Some would argue that some of the new movements might be a little ridiculous, and I’d agree. But the elite competitors do need to be pushed and challenged so I get it.

The Key Similarities

Both of these models really are Functional Fitness at the Core.

Both HYROX and CrossFit are rooted in real-world, functional movement patterns:

  • Squat

  • Hinge

  • Push

  • Pull

  • Carry

This is why both are incredibly effective for performance, longevity, and injury resilience—something we emphasize heavily at CMD and Immortal Athletics. If you can master this list above in any shape or form, then you can develop a level of resiliency that can withstand the test of time. So how awesome is it that both of these modalities really revolve around these movement patterns. As n outsider looking in, these are “sports” are different, but they really so have some extensive overlapping as to the “guts” of it all.

Both of these models also have High Intensity Training that really stress the heart and lungs. This is why so many people really enjoy it because they can truly FEEL like they have accomplished something meaningful and their bodies feel it!

Both demand serious cardiovascular output. Whether it’s a brutal AMRAP or an 8 km HYROX race, athletes are pushed into high heart rate zones and forced to sustain effort under fatigue. This is above and beyond a typical HIIT style training and certainly more grueling than a sustained 8K run. The peaks and valley’s of the heart rate are easily seen on any wearables athletes have and this is largely part of its popularity and appeal to both modalities.

Here is the biggest draw to both…community driven culture! The community that surrounds both HYROX and CROSSFIT is really something special. Some might say “cult-ish”. Whatever label you put on it, you can’t spell culture without CULT. Relax, this is just a joke…but seriously.

This might be the biggest overlap and everybody around our immediate area here in Belmont, Cramerton, Mt Holly and Gaston County really crave and search out.

Both HYROX and CrossFit thrive because of community:

  • Group training environments

  • Shared suffering

  • Competition + accountability

That’s a major reason athletes stick with both long-term. Not necessarily one or the other. In the grand scheme of things, this is simply a bunch of people doing really hard things, together. Both modalities can be performed solo, or in partners so the inclusion factor is extremely high.

The Biggest Differences

Predictability vs Variability

  • HYROX: Same race, every time

  • CrossFit: Constantly varied workouts

HYROX rewards specific preparation
CrossFit builds broad, general fitness

So the obvious questions is, which one is better? Unfortunately, the answer is the one that brings you the most joy. They are both addictive, effective and fun. So really…who cares?

Skill Requirements

CrossFit includes high-skill movements like:

  • Olympic lifts (snatch, clean & jerk)

  • Gymnastics (muscle-ups, handstand walking)

-This is arguably part of the draw and the drawback of CrossFit. So many of these skill requirements take a lot of time and intention to even become proficient at it, let alone a master of it.

HYROX keeps movements more accessible:

  • Running

  • Sled work

  • Lunges

  • Wall balls

-This is definitely part of the appeal. Not a ton of technical movements to learn and most you already know how to do, aside from the wall-balls, most anybody already has some level of proficiency at pushing something, pulling something and lunging. Then, there’s the running, 8,000m worth of it.

The biggest takeaway from this:

HYROX has a lower barrier to entry
CrossFit has a higher skill ceiling

Competition Format

  • HYROX = Endurance race format

  • CrossFit = Multi-event competition (like the CrossFit Games)

HYROX is essentially:

“Can you sustain output for 60–90 minutes?”

CrossFit asks:

“How good are you across everything?”

Energy System Demand

  • HYROX → Aerobic dominance (engine, pacing, durability)

  • CrossFit → Mixed modal (strength + power + conditioning)

This is where specific programming is so meaningful for both HYROX and CROSSFIT. Even though there is a lot of overlap in the modality, The stimulus for training is quite different. Programming for an Aerobic demand vs an explosive conditioning demand is very different and also should be coached differently as well.

Why HYROX Is Exploding in Popularity

It’s Accessible

You don’t need years of skill development to compete. If you can run and move weight safely—you can race. Seriously. Just sign up and try really hard and you will cross that finish line. This isn’t entirely unlike a 5K, 10K or even a half marathon for some folk. You may pay for it afterwards, but you can certainly complete it.

It’s Measurable

Same course = clear benchmarks.

Athletes love:

  • Tracking splits

  • Comparing performances

  • Seeing progress over time

How cool is it that you can take your HYROX race from 3 years ago and slowly see how faster you’ve gotten over each subsequent race? Your run times continue to improve. Your wall-ball sets are much larger. It’s no wonder why it can be so addicting, especially for people who LOVE numbers and comparing to their friends. We all know how we love to scope out each others STRAVA (you know who you are).

It Feels Like a Sport

HYROX has done an incredible job creating:

  • Professional race environments

  • Global rankings

  • Clear divisions

It feels polished—and that matters. Their social proof really is ON-POINT. There is something about that PUMA that just says “CLASSY”. By creating, specific divisions this has allowed everybody to participate in the sports and NOT just the elite.

This is where CROSSFIT kind of shot themselves in the foot. They embraced the entire community with the CROSSFIT OPEN…but then they only celebrate those who are the top 0.01% of the community through crowning the “fittest.”

HYROX took a completely different approach and created more of a FITNESS FESTIVAL and it’s hard to argue against celebrating EVERYBODY who competes during the race.

Why CrossFit Isn’t Going Anywhere

Despite HYROX’s growth, CrossFit still dominates in one critical area:

General Physical Preparedness (GPP). You can try to make a case against this, but you would just be flat wrong and here is why.

CrossFit builds:

  • Strength

  • Power

  • Speed

  • Coordination

  • Skill

It prepares you for anything, not just one race format. This is where the slogan “Train for the Unknown, prepare for the Unknowable.” Just be good at everything! Be strong. Be powerful. Be coordinated and constantly work on developing higher technical skills. There really is no ceiling to how and where you can achieve progress. There really is so much to track and so much to train for…so train everything.

This is where the HYROX RACE falls short…however, you shouldn’t train for HYROX just in the race format. What if your HYROX TRAINING, involved a higher level of GPP? Then you just might be really good at all that other stuff between the 1000m runs…Food for thought for all the HYROXer’s (is this a term yet? If not, then it should be)

The Real Answer: HYROX + CrossFit = Elite Fitness

This is where things get interesting—and where CMD and Immortal Athletics separate themselves.

These two training styles complement each other perfectly. Again, this is an AND not OR. Gen Z might just come at you with BOAF! So much rizz behind it!

How CrossFit Helps HYROX Athletes

  • Builds strength for sled work and lunges

  • Improves power output

  • Enhances movement efficiency

  • Reduces injury risk through varied training

Don’t be mistaken, HYROX is still largely a running race. To this day, we see more runners in our clinic for overuse injuries and obvious muscle imbalances than ANY other sport out there. Have a robust level of strength, power and conditioning is what keeps injuries in check and this is where incorporating the CrossFit methodology into HYROX programming is a really smart thing to do.

How HYROX Helps CrossFit Athletes

  • Develops aerobic capacity (huge limiter in CrossFit)

  • Improves pacing and race strategy

  • Builds mental toughness over long durations

This is what I think is really great. Most of the CrossFit workouts live in the 7-15 min time domain. Occasionally we can throw in a longer chipper workout or even a HERO workout that takes longer…but these are few and far between. And heaven forbid a CrossFit workout has any running distance longer than a mile incorporated in it…the attendance for that day drops significantly. It’s ironic how many people take “rest days” during these classes. (we know who you are and we are coming for you)

Performance Rehab: The Missing Link

Of course I had to throw in a shameless plug for CMD. I mean, we are seeing more and more atheltes training for HYROX and getting hurt. Why is this?

Because they are simply during simulation after simulation and destroying their bodies in the process. So many don’t have the preliminary capacity to sustain 8,000m worth of running to begin with, let along throwing different movements into the mix.

This is where most athletes fall short. And to no fault of their own…

Training hard is one thing—staying healthy while doing it is another.

At CMD (Cramerton, Belmont, Mt. Holly, and Gaston County) and Immortal Athletics, we focus on:

Movement Efficiency

If your mechanics are off:

  • Your performance suffers

  • Your injury risk skyrockets

Load Management

HYROX volume + CrossFit intensity = potential overload without proper planning. This is where we can really help with your programming of which one to lean into and when! We likely would adjust this around whichever race you are signed up for (because you know you are going to)

Hitting a HYROX workout followed by a CrossFit workout later in the day really is a recipe for disaster. Yes, people are doing this.

Recovery Optimization

  • Soft tissue work

  • Mobility systems

  • Aerobic recovery protocols

All of this is within our doors here at Carolina Movement Doc. We are athletes ourselves and we eat, sleep and breathe this stuff!

Who Should Do HYROX?
Who Should Do CrossFit?

Choose HYROX If You:

  • Love endurance challenges

  • Want a clear, structured race goal

  • Prefer lower skill complexity

Choose CrossFit If You:

  • Want well-rounded fitness

  • Enjoy variety

  • Like developing strength and skill

Do BOTH If You:

  • Want to maximize performance

  • Stay engaged long-term

  • Build a body that’s both durable and high-performing (and probably looks good too)

Final Verdict: Is HYROX the New CrossFit?

No—and that’s a good thing.

HYROX isn’t replacing CrossFit.
It’s expanding the functional fitness world.

The smartest athletes—and the ones we work with every day—aren’t choosing one.

They’re leveraging both. And why not? They both are fun and carry with it a different but addicting vibe. Embrace the energy and community from both and you will get ridiculously fit.
